Insurance
Often times our children’s insurance is not adequate enough or are not approved due to pre-existing health conditions which can leave us to feel uncertain about their future. We have compiled a list of options through government programs and individual insurance to assist and offer hope for your child’s well-being.

- Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plans: These new insurance plans are available to U.S. citizens in all 50 states with a pre-existing medical condition who have been uninsured for 6 months or more. These plans provide comprehensive insurance coverage with no pre-existing condition exclusions. In most states, the monthly premium for the standard option plan ranges from about $116 to $626. (There is no health status rating, per se, for these plans, but the premiums are age rated. So the older the person, the higher their premium.) People who live in Georgia, Florida, Nevada, Arizona, and Virginia who’ve not had access to high-risk-pool coverage in the past may find this to be particularly helpful.
- Community Assistance Programs: Thirty states have received funding to provide assistance to consumers and patients experiencing difficulties with their health insurance. For instance, CAPs will help consumers who need help filing complaints or appeals with their insurance companies, answer questions about their rights and responsibilities with respect to insurance coverage, or help individuals sign up for coverage. (And for those states that did not apply for or receive CAP funding, HHS’s website, www.healthcare.gov/consumerhelp, will direct folks to other resources in their state, such as state Insurance Commissioners’ offices or state Attorneys General’s offices that may also provide this type of help.)

Your adult child also may qualify for benefits on your earnings record if he or she has a disability that started before age 22.
